It was a particular market in which Mercedes couldn’t be competitive in for not enough a vehicle, because the GLK turned out to be recommended, why not fill the void in the fighting market by sliding any model. Mercedes BLK proved to be a model that became the idea very good idea, and will fill a void in the market competition and shift the model underneath.

Mercedes BLK constructed on the same MFA architecture (Mercedes Front-wheel drive architecture) because the next era A-Class and B-Class. To be sure, there had been odd exotics, such as the Porsche 959 and the Jaguar XJ220, but it was the sheer brilliance of the McLaren F1 that created a new type of car for road or track. In fact, there were a batch of race cars as well as the 60-odd road cars built and sold for about $1 million each.

Ahead of its time in structure, aerodynamics and sheer performance

The specification was miles ahead of its time, not just in the amount of power available, but in the advanced body structure and aerodynamics. More than anything, though, this was a car that gained from its racing car heritage, whereas some suffer from it: it is simple, lightweight, extremely efficient, yet easy to drive. Much of the performance advantage comes from the simple, advanced design which made it very light a curb weight of just 2,504 lb (1,137 kg), which is 530 lb less than the Carrera GT, the latest design from Porsche. A huge difference.

A top speed of 240 mph

Little wonder then that the F1 is still seen by many experts as the best exotic car ever built. And what about the performance? An F1 has been timed at 240 mph, still the fastest speed recorded by a road going car that's 35 mph faster than the Carrera GT, and 20 mph faster than the Ferrari Enzo. To be sure, the Bugatti Veyron is supposed to be faster, but until it is in production no one can say, and just bear in mind that if it does reach 245 mph, it will be using 50% more power than the F1 to get there. Hardly progress.

Straight from the start, the McLaren is stunningly fast, pushing the driver back in the beautifully shaped seat as no other car can: 60 comes up in 3. seconds from rest, and 100 mph in 6.5 seconds. Take it from me these are stunning times, which leave you gasping.

V-12 unique to McLaren

So what made the F1 so good? Well, once Gordon Murray, the design chief of McLaren had conceived the concept for the car, he had to find an engine, and turned to the engine supplier for the McLaren Grand Prix cars at that time BMW. BMW came up with a 60-degree V-12 6.0 litre engine developing no less than 627 bhp at 7,500 rpm, with 480 lb ft of torque available from 4,000 to 7,000 rpm, thanks to variable valve timing.

Exclusive to McLaren the engine was way ahead of its time, and is still rivaled by only a few cars such as the Enzo (650 bhp), Carrera GT (604 bhp) and Pagani Zonda (550 bhp). So clearly, McLaren started off with the right engine. The engine is installed fore-and-aft, but unusually, the six-speed gearbox is installed across the car where it takes up hardly any space at all, which helped keep the rear end compact.

21st century aerodynamics in 1994

Murray's design for a mid-engined coupe was conventional enough, although it took advantage of the firm's experience with aerodynamics in Grand Prix cars to steal a march on its rivals. Not only did it have diffusers now becoming essential on exotic supercars to get the air away from underneath the car, but free of the regulations that surround Grand Prix racing, Murray fitted fans to draw the air out from the back of the car. So the car needs just a small spoiler which rises at speed to produce down force at the back. All this was done over 10 years ago.

Controversial central driving position

The other unusual feature is the central driving position with a passenger seat each side of the driver. This works fine on a race track, but is a real nuisance on the road. First, it is quite a job to hoist yourself over the sill then into a passenger seat and then into the driver's seat. Secondly, you can't see properly to overtake. Thirdly, you tend to drive relative to where you are, and it can take quite a bit of adjustment to keep yourself in the middle of the lane.

When you are in the McLaren, you sit between a pair structural carbon fiber frame members, which give the car a lot of stiffness, but also give you a nice feeling of security. Otherwise, the central driving position could be considered a flaw in an otherwise superb car. However, it did enable McLaren to build identical cars to suit countries that drive on the left or the right. Ideal for the few cars that were built.

Although the F1 followed Grand Prix practice in having a carbon fiber monocoque, it was unusual in that it was reinforced by aluminum honeycomb panels these consist of two thin aluminum sheets between which very thin honeycombs are bonded, providing very light and stiff panels.

Softer suspension than most competitors

To position the suspension accurately, the pivots are mounted on sub frames. The double wishbone front and rear suspension, with co-axial springs and dampers, were inspired by the McLaren Grand Prix cars, and then special joints were developed to suit road use.

The springs are fairly soft for this type of car, so the ride is reasonable, and roll is controlled by front and rear anti-roll bars. Fairly soft suspension not only makes for a good ride, but it also keeps the wheels on the road over bumpy surfaces. Cars with hard suspension tend to jump about on bumpy corners, which loses time on the track, and is disconcerting to the driver on the road.

Up with the best of the new exotic cars

Apart from its low weight, the McLaren F1 is similar in concept to the latest and best exotic supercars in the $500,000 plus bracket. However, it is simpler in many ways, partly because that was the aim, and partly because suitable power steering, ABS and so on weren't available then. So, the steering is manual, whereas these days it's had to buy even a small car without power steering, and as on racing cars you don't get power-assisted brakes, let alone ABS or traction control.

Sure, the steering is a bit heavy, and you have to press quite hard to slow down. The electrifying acceleration that pushes you back into your seat even at 120 mph sets the pulses tingling and more than makes up for the heavy controls. Also, the handling gives the driver confidence in its superb ability to be driven fast and safely.

Yes, sir, the McLaren F1 is still the standard by which other exotic supercars are judged, and in handling and acceleration they're all found not quite to match this masterful supercar.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993852571104662141.post-92223927036663697002021-04-06T23:45:00.000-07:002021-06-14T05:44:07.964-07:00Porsche 911 Carrera, Supercar Performance All-Round

Porsche do many things so brilliantly that you're impressed as soon as you start asking the new Porsche 911 Carrera to get a move on. In fact, everything looks right as soon as you open the door and slide in. Quality beams at you, but more important on a fast car, once adjusted, everything seems in the right place.

So when I got onto my favorite test route, I'm getting the flavour straight away. Ease out of a T-junction, squirt into a tight S-bend, where the road narrows a bit, with walls on each side, another squirt and brake for the the right turn off onto a minor road.

Loves tricky bends and short straights

It's a tricky bend, more than a right-angle, and is followed by a left-handler. The 911 just sails around without any roll, and soon I'm accelerating hard no I'm not as there's a slow car in the way, and a bend ahead. Check brake, and wait till after the bend, and the road is clear. Floor the throttle; the car we're overtaking seems to stand still as we rocket past, the engine revs building from about 4,000 to 6,000 rpm in no time. Soon we're roaring along with the revs over 7,000 rpm and shift up.

It doesn't take long before you know that this car is as quick as they say it is, able to get to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds, and with a top speed of 177 mph.

Powerful engine in a light coupe

That's the 911 Carrera at its best. You hardly turn the wheel to steer the car out past the other car to overtake, the steering is that direct. You don't need to get into the right gear well beforehand, because the gearshift is so slick and quick that you're in the right gear in a sec.

With 325 bhp at 6,800 rpm and reasonable weight curb weight is 3,070 lb (1,395 kg) the 911 Carrera is lighter than many of its competitors. So you've got the acceleration to get past traffic easily even when you come up behind three or four in a row. Of course, you're helped by the fact that people expect a Porsche to shoot past them.

Unlike some supercar engines, the 911 also delivers its torque quite low down maximum torque is 273 lb ft (370 Nm) at 4,250 rpm. Although the red line on the dial is at 8,000 rpm, the cut-off speed is around 7,300-7,500, giving you plenty of revs to play with. Nor does the engine run out of steam when you get past peak power it just keeps roaring.

Superb engine as Porsche knows how

You soon realize that this is a superb engine, and that a flat-six can hack the pace with many a V-8. No problem, no dramas. It's matched by a super gearbox with a slick shift, so you don't find yourself fishing for the right gear as you can with some cars. It's always a piece of cake to get the power down on to the road.

Porsche has always understood the need for good clear instruments better than most, and the 911 Carrera is spot on. You get a central rev counter with a speedometer off to the left, but there's a digital speedo below the rev counter with the trip computer read-out. All the controls come to hand easily, and there's a simple but fine steering wheel hot hatches go in for all sorts of shaped rims these days, but Porsche doesn't need that. Simple and effective.

Light steering with good feedback

The interior is neatly trimmed with stitched leather, and the seat feels right from the start, giving a decent amount of lateral support.

The steering is quite light after all, there's not much weight on the front wheels but it tells you what's going on all the time. When you're driving on a long a straight road, it is best to hold the wheel lightly, and let it joggle a bit from side to side as the car negotiates the minor bumps and blemishes in the road. You can take you hands off at 80 mph, and the 911 continues on a straight line undeterred.

After a while, you feel that the steering is engaging you with the car and the road surface, and most of the time you hardly turn the wheel to change direction or corner. Turn in is quick without any hesitancy, and it is best to enter the corner so that you can accelerate out hard if you want to.

The 911 Carrera rides on Michelin Pilot Sport 235/35 front and 295/30 rear tires which provide masses of cornering power, so in normal circumstances you have plenty in reserve when you corner.

Swings through corners with ease

You can sail around most corners well within the limit, swinging through them at high speeds. Even so, the 911 can behave in a disconcerting manner at times. You tend to be thinking in terms of over steer, so when you enter a long slow corner and strong under steer builds up, which it can do surprisingly easily, you're not expecting it unless you've been driving 911s for years. But that's easy to get used to as it's predictable.

This under steer can also show itself when you enter a corner with adverse camber or with a poor surface. The front end just patters outward a bit. This is one of the features of the 911 that detracts from the whole, because you can't just wind extra lock on quickly in case that sets the tail wagging.

That apart, the car behaves very well. The brakes are very powerful, stopping or slowing the car very quickly without any appreciable pitching, and work well with the suspension, steering and power train to get you around the country very quickly indeed.

PASM and PSM

These days, Porsche gives you some extra electronics to help. First, there is PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) which is an option on the Carrera and standard on the Carrera S. Normally, PASM adjusts the damper settings according to conditions, so when you drive faster the damping is firmer. This is best for most motoring.

When you start driving hard along twisty roads you might want to switch to Sport as I did which lowers the car slightly, and keeps the stiff settings all the time. Not so good when you have to go slowly through a village with poor road surfaces, but the best when you're really pushing hard.

PSM (Porsche Stability System) is standard, and should you corner too fast for the conditions, PSM intervenes to maintain stability up to the limit, as they are careful to state in the instruction manual!

Superb driving machine

As a driving machine, the new 911 Carrera is a superb tool, offering terrific acceleration and the agility to sweep through fast bends with virtually no roll. It has a pleasant interior, with a luxurious feel, and is equipped as few cars are. If you opt for the Sport Chrono package you even get a built in stop watch as part of a system which adjusts the performance closer to that you would want on a race track.

Of course, the 911 cruises effortlessly and fairly quietly. With a reasonable space for luggage in the front and plenty of room on the back seats they're only for short people for short distances the 911 Carrera makes a practical grand tourer, especially since the fuel consumption is not bad at all.

If you're a 911 fan, you'll love this car because it moves the 911 forward giving you plenty of extra performance in all directions, but it's still clearly a 911. Looks great too.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993852571104662141.post-72217587006125940332021-03-12T10:11:00.000-08:002021-06-14T05:39:30.708-07:00Maserati MC12 Versione Corse

A semi-racing car, the Maserati MC12 Versione Corse joins the band of truly exotic cars, as only 12 or so will be built. The car is based on the racing version of the MC12 the GT1 which won the FIA GT1 championships in 2005 and 2006.

But this is a very high-powered car, although not up to the power output of the Ferrari FXX, Koenigsegg CCX. The Enzo-based 6.0 liter engine is tuned to develop 755 bhp, which will make the car mega-quick. To meet the GT1 regulations, the MC12 GT1 is detuned to 600 bhp, so this is a rare case of the private owner getting more power than the works team.

This is a sort of trackday special, for the man or woman who has everything! Evidently, it does not meet the regulations that would allow it to be driven on the road, and there is no class of racing for which it is suitable, nor has Maserati announced any series of meetings for the car. Although the Ferrari FXX is in a similar situation, Ferrari has arranged a series of events for owners.

Maserati V-12 engine and sequential box

Unlike the racing version, which as a manual gearbox and just one seat, the Maserati MC12 Versione Corse, is a two-seater, and has the sequential six-speed transmission, similar to that available on the standard MC12, but developed to withstand the extra power. Maserati also offers a sequential box on the Coupe, Spyder and GranSport.

So, the heart of the Maserati MC12 Versione Corse is a near racing engine with four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing and a dry sump system. It is coupled to a good, but not perfect, sequential box.

Maserati MC12 revised body

The body shape and body structure, which are based on the Ferrari Enzo carbon fiber hull, but lengthened with different front and rear sub-frames. However, the body has been changed. At the front, the large air intake is now divided into three, the large outer pair feeding air to the twin radiators, which exhaust through outlets in the hood.

To allow for easy replacement after a shunt, the nose of the car is a detachable panel. There are a series of louvers over each front wheel, and large air outlets behind the front wheels. There are also large air intakes forward of the front wheels, and a small air intake above the cockpit for the engine.

To reduce high-speed lift, there is a massive wing mounted high up at the rear. This is in addition to a low fixed wing at the rear of the body.

Inside is a simple fascia and a pair of bucket seats. The quadrant style rev-counter is the centerpiece of the instrument binnacle, and alongside is the 360 kph speedo. You get a steering wheel with straight top and bottom, and you don’t get a gear lever at all. The usual paddles sit in front of the steering wheel, while you have a start button on the console and a reverse button on the narrow tunnel.

Both front and rear suspensions are very similar to those of the Enzo and standard MC12, with long wishbones front and rear, acting through push rods to inboard coil spring/damper units. These are mounted horizontally as on the Enzo. The dampers have variable rates. The aluminum sub-frames at front and rear are unique to the MC12, and make the car a little longer and wider.

An out-and-out racer, the Maserati MC12 Versione Corse will appeal to those seeking a very high-powered car which will be at home on the race track. If that is you, place your order soon, as there are not many available.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993852571104662141.post-67904528368579775722021-03-09T02:12:00.000-08:002021-06-14T05:24:27.202-07:00Bentley Continental Supersports, Improved Gearbox And Suspension

A two-seater from Bentley? If you were expecting a mid-engined coupe loosely linked to the Le Mans car you're in for a disappointment. However, if you want a solid smooth riding car that can get you to 100 mph in less than 9 seconds, and hurtle on to 200 mph , then this is for you.

Why two seats? Well, in the 1920s Bentley produced a model called the Supersports which was a two-seater version of a four-seater. Otherwise, removing the rear seats and putting in a luggage shelf does little other than make the car less useful while saving 100 lb (45 kg) in weight.

Not just to make it look sporty, but for practical reasons, there are deep air intakes at the side of the main grille art the front and air outlets from the engine compartment. These do make the car look more aggressive and high-powered, and the only other changes are slightly wider fenders to provide room for bigger wheels and a revised rear end.

Those large air intakes at the front feed cool air directly to the twin inter coolers, while the air outlets reduce front-end lift.

Lighter (slightly), very fast

Altogether, weight is reduced by 240 lb (110 kg), which would not be so bad if the car Continental were not so heavy to start with the new car weighs in at 4,939 lbs (2,240 kg). That is very heavy.

Nevertheless, this is a very desirable and extremely quick car that, despite the weight, can race to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, and hit 204 mph, thanks to an even more powerful version of the W-12 engine shared with the Audi A8.

Larger turbo, massive torque

With larger turbos to increase boost, the new engine develops 621 bhp (463 kW) @ 6,000 rpm, with a prodigious amount of torque at almost any speed - 590 lb ft (800 Nm) @ 1,700 to 5,600 rpm. The engine is coupled to an upgraded version of the ZF six-speed automatic, which has faster shifts thanks to the reduction of torque momentarily when upward shifts are made.

This approach is in direct contrast to the delivery of full torque during shifts of the modern twin-clutch transmissions, but with this much power available no time is lost.

Upgraded suspension

To suit the sporty aspirations of the Supersports, the continuously variable damping has been altered, suspension bushes stiffened, and the anti-roll bars are thicker. The car rides 0.4 in(10 mm) lower at the front, and 0.6 in (15 mm) lower at the rear very modest lowering.

The really good news about the Supersports is that it gets the latest four-wheel drive set-up, with 60% of torque going to the rear wheels, and 40% to the front. This set-up cuts the tendency to excessive under steer of the standard Continental GT, and will make the car handle much better.

To complete the changes to the chassis, huge carbon-ceramic brakes are standard, while lightweight 20-inch wheels but are they lighter than 19-inch ones? - are shod with Pirelli 275/35 R20 tires, which will give plenty of grip.

Any proportion of bio fuel

Finally, with the Continental Supersports, Bentley moves into the bio fuel era, since the engine and fuel system have been re-engineered to run on any combination of gasoline and bio fuel and still deliver the same performance.

This involves a major redesign of the fuel system and controller. Without doubt, the Bentley Continental Supersports is a superb supercar, but what a pity it could not have been shortened in the wheelbase by a 12 inch (300 mm) so that it was at least 500-600 lb (230-270 kg) lighter, with aluminum or carbon fiber external panels.

In the financial environment we now live in, not very likely I'm afraid. In fact, as it is, no doubt such a heavy and powerful car will be seen as a bit of dinosaur in some quarters. Nevertheless, a very exciting car.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993852571104662141.post-37593803081391810572021-02-11T06:24:00.000-08:002021-06-14T05:24:27.239-07:00 Daihatsu Ayla, City Car That Is Easy To Control

Small cars are still a mainstay for Indonesians until the end of 2018. Due to the density of the capital city Jakarta and the narrow roads, city cards can easily bulldoze various urban terrains without significant problems.

In addition, the fuel consumption of a city car is one of the best among other car types.

CITY CAR PHENOMENON IN INDONESIA

Because the city car is intended as a car used in urban areas. Apart from the two things above, there are also other aspects such as convenience and the availability of spare parts at a fairly cheap price.

One of the city cars currently loved by the Indonesian people is Daihatsu Ayla. Yep, the car that is included in the LCGC scheme by the Indonesian government is one of the best-selling cars in Indonesia. Maybe not everyone knows the progress and completeness of Daihatsu Ayla's features.

AYLA DESIGN

By design, this car does not have a significant difference when compared to the previous generation. Some changes only happened to the front and back of this car.

At the front, the headlamps have now implemented LEDs with a new lamp design.

It gives off a sporty and aggressive feel compared to the previous generation. The front bumper also looks firmer compared to the previous facelift version.

The grille with chrome accents also adds to the luxurious impression of this city car. Now at the bottom of the bumper there are two fog lamps which use the LED model. This change has made the latest generation of Ayla appear better than the old version.

On the other hand, it is almost the same as the previous version, only the wheels used now look more attractive with the combination of black and silver dual tones.

The back which we think is much more attractive than the previous version. For the previous version, the rear of the car looks monotonous, but in this latest generation the rear design looks more sporty and very cool. Honestly, we prefer the rear design of this car compared to the previous version.

In this latest model Ayla really looks sporty from behind. The design of the taillights has changed, being cooler than the previous generation.

INTERIOR DESIGN

After discussing the exterior, what about the interior? Only the head unit, seat, steering wheel and trim parts are different.

The rest, there are no significant changes from this car. The interior is still the same as the old version, only now it uses a 2DIN touch screen unit which makes it more modern.

The speedometer display also still uses the old model, only on the steering wheel which is given an additional setting button for audio from the head unit. AC button, mirror button, ac outlet are all exactly the same.

The seats now look like racing seats with pieces that we think are pretty cool too. The door trim also uses a color that matches the seats, no longer black like the old version.

Regarding storage space, this car still has a lot of storage space. It's on the door, glove box, near the steering wheel, under the dashboard, and the center console near the handbrake.

DAIHATSU AYLA SEAT

The seat position of the new model is also more comfortable than the previous generation. This is because the foam seats are thicker and the seat cut design is more sporty as if it hugs the body tightly. Ah, so I want to sit down for a long time.

The second row seats now have a more sloping position, giving a more relaxed sitting effect than the first version of Ayla, which has a more upright sitting position.

At the back, there is now a luggage tray which can be used to cover items in the trunk and put things on the tray. The refresh is quite good, we think a tray like this is important enough to give this car a neat impression.

What about the features of this car? Daihatsu now provides several additional features such as back sonar at the rear for the X and R types, dual SRS airbags, side impact beams, immobilizer lock, rear stabilizer, anti-spare clutch pedal which is useful for breaking the brake pedal when the car has an impact.

SECURITY FEATURES

Regarding safety, this car has two point airbags, child safety lock and seat belt reminder. Although this car is a small car, the engine capacity used is almost the same as the MPV in Indonesia.

As if to truly understand what consumers want, Daihatsu gave birth to this latest generation of Ayla with a new engine.

ENGINE AND FUEL

In the first generation, Ayla only comes with an engine with a capacity of 998, 3 cylinders with 64 hp with a choice of 5 speed manual transmission.

Now, Daihatsu Ayla comes with a 1,197 cc, 4 cylinder, 88 hp engine with a choice of manual and automatic transmissions. These changes and refreshments of course bring fresh air to Daihatsu sales. Because of this, the sales of this car are increasing every year.

Regarding fuel consumption, Daihatsu Ayla is one of the cars that has very good fuel consumption. As an illustration, this car can travel 15-20 km for one liter of gasoline. Of course this is also balanced with the driving style and quiet road conditions.

The fuel consumption of each car certainly cannot be used as a benchmark, because every driver has a driving style that will never be the same.

DAIHATSU AYLA SHORT REVIEW

When starting the engine, the first impression is no different, just like the old version. It's just that once the gear goes, the power supplied by this 1,200 cc engine feels quite full.

The handling of this car is also increasing. So it is better to be invited to bulldoze corners even though the conditions are quite fast. The symptoms of anxiety are still felt, but it's better than the first generation. The smooth and smooth character of the engine makes driving quite comfortable.

The sitting position provided by the front seats feels slightly elevated. This can only be caused by thicker coating foam. Sitting in the second row, also feels quite relaxed. This is due to the seat position that collapsed more than the first generation, which had a seat with a solid sitting position. Head and leg room has no difference, it's the same.

The sound quality produced by standard audio feels better. The informative convenience of this touchscreen head unit makes it easy to organize your favorite tunes via a Bluetooth network that can be connected to a smartphone.

The sound control button on the steering wheel also adds to the impression of luxury and provides comfort while driving.

The rest, this car still feels the same as the previous generation. Our advice is, if you are a person who likes to drive a little bit go for this car with manual transmission. The power delivered by the manual transmission of the 1,200 cc engine is better than the automatic transmission.

We think the automatic transmission is quite slow when it kicks in. So come back to your taste and driving style of all people.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
